In early December 2016 we staged the second Durham City Nativity in the Market Place. We had  fantastic support from Interserve Ltd who constructed several scaffolding stages for us free of charge, which helped the large crowd (there were 4000 extra people in Durham that night!) to see the full Nativity story. We were supported by BID, the University Gospel choir, the Bell ringers, and an army of helpers, including the technical and production crew sorting out costumes, sound and lighting. The actors and choir and camels and a donkey gave us a memorable evening after which we were able to welcome around 400 people into church for a free hot chocolate, a Christmas book or comic for children and a chance to light a candle to pray for someone at Christmas. The event was also videoed by students from New College, and their film can be viewed here. In addition we had a film crew from Leeds following the camels journey up the A1 and performing in the Market Place. This was featured in BBC documentary on the A1 which was shown in Spring 2017.

Plans for the 2017 Nativity are already starting to take shape and the camels are booked for Thursday Dec 7th.

CASTING TAKES PLACE ON MONDAY 9TH OCTOBER AT 8PM IN CHURCH

If you would like to help or take part in any way, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Brian Hill on 07866 791 584

We particularly need:
• Actors - a cast of between 15 and 20 are needed and casting will take place on 9th October at 8pm in church
• Singers - there will be a St Nics choir - last year we had around 50 in the choir. Tony Harries will be organising rehearsals in the near future
• someone to organise the stewards, and we need additional adult stewards on the day to give some control of the audience.
• Set Builders and Assistant stage managers to source props and build the sets that go on the performance stages
• Publicity coordinator  to coordinate the publicity - contacting TV, Radio, Newspapers, social media groups, and a whole range of other places
• Spotlight operators to help prepare the lights and turn them on and off at the appropriate time
• People to prepare and serve refreshments in church after the event - last year we served over 400 cups of hot chocolate in church in the 30 minutes after the performance
• People to help with leafleting before the event and on the night.
• People to help prepare the costumes

Everyone involved last year thoroughly enjoyed themselves and made the event a massive success. So please, mark the date in your diary and think about what you can do to help. Please talk to Brian Hill or any of the Nativity planning team:
