St Nic’s interns’ project started in September 2010, our interns are able to be involved in all aspects of church life, particularly youth and children's work, student work and the community coffee lounge. The first three interns (2010 – 2011) made really positive contribution in all these areas and our present intern Tarsila (Taz) Burity is also making a real impact at St Nic’s. She focuses on work with postgraduate students and midweek groups for children and young people but she can also be found in the community coffee lounge and overseeing the practical arrangements for the 7pm service at Sanctuary 21. She is currently developing a video group for St Nic’s and hopes to produce some material for use at Easter.
We hope that to have up to four interns from September 2012 until June 2013.
In return for a voluntary commitment of 30 hours a week the interns receive the opportunity to work with a dedicated, enthusiastic and experienced staff in a lively city centre church, the chance to gain experience across a wide range of ministries, 10 hours of theological study each week and free accommodation - all living together in a rented house in the centre of Durham.
The training course has been developed by Rev David Day, former principal of St John's College Durham and is taught partly at Cranmer Hall and partly in house, by St Nic's staff. Modules include Biblical Studies, Christian Mission in the Modern World and Personal and Spiritual Development. The interns are also encouraged to share their faith on a Mission placement along with other students from Cranmer Hall and in 2011 and 2012 they have been invited to be college guests at the DICCU Main Event. Each intern is also given a conference budget and encouraged to attend at least one conference during the year.
